PSF participates in 2-day S&T Expo in Lahore

ISLAMABAD (September 24, 2019): Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) participated in a 2-day Expo on “The Role of Science and Technology (S&T) Education for Industrial Development” at Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories Complex Lahore on September 23-24, 2019. The Expo was organized on the directions of the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology. The event was participated by all organizations under Ministry of S&T and the well-known brands of the country including Pepsi Co, Nestle, GFC Fans, Green Technology Solutions, Surgical Manufacturers Association Sialkot, Shahzad Pumps, Guard Engine Oil Group, Pakistan Association of Spare Parts and Accessories, Hemani International (Pvt.) Ltd., Golden Dynamics, Bread & Beyond, Starco Fans, Haleeb, Dunkin Donuts, Engro, KAM Engineering, Zephyr Textile Group, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, University of the Punjab, Forman Christian College University, GC University, NUST and HEC.

Prince Muhammad Nawaz, Parliamentary Secretary for S&T, who was the Chief Guest at the inaugural ceremony, inaugurated the Expo on September 23. The inaugural session of the Expo was also attended by Senator Mushtaq Ahmad, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on S&T, MNA Dr. Samina Matloob, Air Vice Marshal Rana Anees Latif from NUTECH, Mr. Habibullah, Senior Joint Secretary, Ministry of Science & Technology, Hamad-ur-Rehman, General Manager Production of Pakistan Suzuki Motors and Dr. Syeda Qurat-ul-Ain Director General PCSIR Labs Complex Lahore.

Parliamentary Secretary Prince Muhammad Nawaz speaking on this occasion highlighted the importance of higher education, especially S&T education. He said S&T education is imperative for economic development. He stressed the need for quality S&T education to achieve the targets of sustainable economic development.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, Chairman on the Standing Committee on S&T, emphasized the need of S&T based achievements. He said the attack on Pakistan by Indian Air Force in February 2019 was thwarted by Pakistan Air Force due to our S&T based strength over India. We had well advanced fighter jets including JF-17 Thunder as compared to Indian jets, he maintained. He said that the triangle of politics, sports and showbiz have occupied our society in media whereas we need the triangle of R&D institutions, academia and industry for sustainable economic and industrial development.

Mr. Habibullah, Senior Joint Secretary, MoST, said that S&T have profound impact on our life and the present government has placed S&T development on priority. He called upon all the stakeholders to join hands and devise a strategy for S&T development. He informed the participants of the ceremony that the government has constituted a taskforce on S&T for chalking out this strategy.

Later the Chief Guest along with other dignitaries inaugurated the Expo and visited the stalls set up by public and private sector organizations. The Chief Guest also awarded shields to the organization participating in the Expo.

The PSF stall also representing its subsidiary organizations Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) and Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Center (PASTIC) was visited by a large number of people from different walks of life, especially researchers, faculty members and students from various educational and R&D institutions. They were briefed on PSF research funding and science popularization programmes. Printed material on PSF programmes was also distributed among the visitors. The researchers took keen interest in PSF research funding and S&T educational programmes. The 2-day Expo concluded on the evening of September 24, 2019.
